Video Game Design (Ages 9-14)
Code it. Design it. Bring it to life!

Older students dive deeper into game design and coding, using platforms like Minecraft, Roblox Studio, Bloxels, and other beginner-friendly tools to build fully playable, interactive games. This class combines creativity, coding, and problem-solving, giving students a strong foundation in computational thinking and digital design.
Students will:
-
Design custom game worlds, characters, levels, and quests
-
Program game mechanics using block-based and beginner-friendly coding
-
Test, refine, and iterate on their games through playtesting
-
Explore storytelling, logic, and interactive design
-
Collaborate with classmates on larger projects and challenges
-
Optionally experiment with advanced tools like Unity or Godot for students ready for a bigger challenge
By the end of the course, students will have their own fully playable games, gaining confidence in coding, design, teamwork, and problem-solving—skills that prepare them for future STEM learning and creative projects.

In this first course, we cover the fundamentals of Roblox coding while creating enjoyable games. Most kids haven't had much experience with complicated coding environments like Roblox Studio, which combines construction and programming into one package. We'll learn about workspaces, objects, and how to customise object features like colour and texture. We'll also start learning Lua, Roblox's text-based programming language. For many children, this is their first experience with text-based coding. Students will learn how to code in Lua and how to use conditionals, loops, and variables.

The ability to instantly develop multiplayer gaming experiences is one of the most powerful components of Roblox coding. Students learn how to create multiplayer games as part of this Roblox coding course, which allows them to ask their friends to play their games with them, which is both enjoyable and inspiring! We'll also use Lua scripting to go further into coding ideas like functions and event handling, while continuing to reinforce earlier programming principles.

With level 3 of our Roblox coding class, the learning and fun continue. We'll take it up a level and create two more entertaining games. By collecting things from a conveyor belt, earning cash, and swapping for droppers and treasures, you'll discover how to construct a little economy in your game. We'll also learn how to make multiplayer games with rudimentary intelligence where players interact with in-game characters. Advanced coding techniques such as tables, very complicated usage of variables, and functions are covered in the classes.
